The Black Mausoleum is a supposedly haunted vault found in Greyfriars Cemetery in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, it is the dwelling place of the Mackenzie Poltergeist.
History[]
The Black Mausoleum is the final resting place of a fearsome figure within Scottish history known as George Mackenzie, who entered into folklore due to his ruthless oppression of religious minorities in life and the belief he continues to exist as a malevolent spirit within the Black Mausoleum and the surrounding area, known as the Covenanter's Prison, a place he regularly used to kill and torture victims.
The Black Mausoleum has been sealed off from the public save for special tours but in the past many dark stories were passed down of victims entering the Black Mausoleum and suffering extremely unpleasant fates, often getting attacked by the malevolent force within.
Some victims included grave robbers but by far the most infamous tale is of a schoolboy who hid inside the Mausoleum one night to avoid a beating by a teacher and came out insane after encountering the spirit within.
Since then the phenomena around the mausoleum and the Covenanters Prison has escalated, visitors have reported being pushed and scratched and feeling nauseous to the point of passing out.
The death of popular local Spiritualist Colin Grant following an exorcism at the Mausoleum and prison in the January of 2000, added a tragic dimension to the growing legend of the poltergeist.
Even to this day visitors on tours have reported being attacked or feeling extreme unease in or around the vault, with some even showing poltergeist symptoms such as scars and cuts on their bodies.
