The Bishop-fish is a sea monster similar to the Monkfish, of which it probably constitutes a variant. According to legend, in 1531 a specimen of this animal was captured in the Baltic Sea and offered as a gift to the king of Poland. Later he was shown to Catholic bishops and on that occasion he asked to be released. Granted this favor, the fish made the sign of the cross and disappeared into the sea. It was described and represented in the fourth volume of Conrad Gesner's Historiae Animalium.
