The Bhlemphroim are a race of creatures which first appeared in Clark Ashton Smith's 1932 short story "The Door to Saturn".

Description[]

Hairless humanoid creatures roughly the same size as a man, the Bhlemphroims, although once possessing a distinct cranium, have over time evolved so that now their heads occupy a position in the chest cavity, in the same manner as the other natives of their homeworld, the Ydheem. They have developed a certain level of technology, but have little interest in advancing their knowledge beyond the point of basic agriculture. They are indigenous to the planet Cykranosh, where their territories are collectively known as Vhlorrh.

Reproduction[]

Although they are a race possessed of two distinct sexes, the Bhlemphroim do not propagate in the same manner as earthly species. Instead, a single female is chosen to be the mother to a whole generation of Bhlemphroim; this female is then fed a specially prepared diet over the course of many years, until she reaches gargantuan proportions. At that point, a small group of males are chosen by committee to father the next generation. Once they have performed their function, these males are served as meals to the female to aid in bringing the young to term.
