The Aperture is a giant creature and sub-boss in the survival-horror game The Evil Within 2. It appears as a large mass of writhing tentacles surrounding an eye designed after a camera lens. This entity is a psychological construct of Stefano Valentini, who had lost an eye during his time as a wartime journalist. The eye represents the concept of Stefano opening his eyes to new ideas and overseeing everything taking place within Union and STEM as a whole.
History[]
During a large portion of the game, the Aperture appears in the sky above Union, symbolizing that Stefano is watching everything unfolding within the town. Sebastian Castellanos first witnesses the Aperture after exiting the Tredwell Trucking Warehouse when the entity summons several Lost to attack him. While Sebastian is able to fend off the creatures and flee to Union Town Hall, the Aperture maintains its gaze upon him, later conjuring up a Guardian to kill the detective.
Sebastian survives his battle with the Guardian and later proceeds to the Business District. Here, the Aperture drives its tentacles into the ground, tearing open great fissures and summoning more of the Lost. While Sebastian survives this encounter as well, the Aperture is not yet done with him. When Sebastian arrives at the Grand Theater to confront Stefano, the creature tears away parts of the roof and walls, the beam of light emanating from its eye sweeping the building like a searchlight.
The Aperture then intervenes during Sebastian's fight with Stefano, attempting to crush the detective with its tentacles. Once Stefano is killed, however, the Aperture dies with him, disintegrating with a low groan.
Trivia[]
- The segment where Sebastian must evade Aperture's light is reminiscent of when Sebastian had to escape Ruvik's eye towards the end of Chapter 15 of the first game.
- The Aperture's lens, just like Stefano's own camera, bears an inscription which reads "Veritas as-modeus".
