Anthony Fremont is the villain of the short story It's a Good Life, which was adapted in an episode of television series The Twilight Zone in 1961. He is a three-year-old (six-year-old in the TV adaptation) child with unlimited powers, which he uses to dictate his law to his entire town. He is referred to as a "monster" in the episode's introduction and the story describes him with an "odd shadow" and a "bright, wet purple gaze," hinting a supernatural, and possibly demonic origin. The short story also states that the obstetrician who helped his mother to give birth screamed and tried to kill him, only to meet his own demise.

History[]

Anthony Fremont lived in the small town of Peaksville, Ohio. By the age of six, little Anthony had manifested great and terrible powers. He could hear the thoughts of the residents of Peaksville and knew when people were thinking bad things about him. He would punish these people by banishing them to a formless limbo realm that he called the "Cornfield". Over time, Anthony used his immense power to completely dominate Peaksville, isolating the town from the rest of the world. He would manage the town's food supplies and govern when people were allowed to watch television.

By his forties, Anthony still controlled all of Peaksville. He had a child, a daughter whom he named Audrey, who possessed similar powers to him. He raised Audrey with the help of his mother, Agnes, but when the girl's powers began to manifest, Agnes tried to persuade her granddaughter to use her powers against her father. Audrey, however, remained loyal to her father and the two of them banished everyone in Peaksville to the Cornfield. It was at this point, however, that Anthony realised just how lonely he was, and so he and Audrey restored Peaksville and its people to their rightful place in the world.

Powers[]

  • Telekinesis - Anthony is able to move objects with his mind.
  • Telepathy - Anthony can read the thoughts of everyone within Peaksville and potentially beyond. Not only can he read minds, he can attack the brains of his enemies and render them catatonic.
  • Transmutation - Anthony has also demonstrated the ability to alter the physical and atomic structure of objects and people, transforming them into completely different things.
  • Teleportation - Anthony teleports those who upset him to an empty void called the Cornfield. He can not only do this to individuals but even did so to the entire town of Peaksville, separating it from the rest of the Earth.
