The Adze is a malicious spirit from African folklore, specifically from the Ewe people of West Africa, like many spirits of its kind the creature is a symbolism of evil and also an attempt to explain very real dangers people experienced on a daily basis, such as disease and the vermin responsible for spreading it.
Due to the blood-sucking nature of the creature it is also a regional variant of the vampire myth, found in almost every culture on Earth throughout history.
Biography[]
The Adze is an evil spirit that takes the form of a firefly unless it is caught; at which point it turns into a human and when in human form, it has the ability to possess others and cause their negative traits to heighten (for example it would make someone's jealousy intensify or increase bitterness); often those possessed by an Adze would become witches or other malicious agents.
When in its firefly form, an Adze would fly into homes and suck the blood of victims; causing its victims to grow sick and die (this was likely an attempt to explain the disease-carrying mosquito, which even to this day poses great danger due to malaria and other ailments passed on by their parasitic feeding).
